I’m not a fan of what I call the classic “middle-grade sarcastic” language.  I get that it’s supposed to lure kids into reading non-fiction by keeping it real. Totally my opinion- but I don’t like it.  It shortchanges kids into thinking if it doesn’t sound like another kid talking to them then it isn’t interesting. The tone of this book is not all sarcastic- but it has its moments.

Anyhow, each chapter contains the story of a person who changed history by rebelling against society. The timeline of individuals ranges from Spartacus to Nelson Mandela. The profiles are listed in order of actual appearance and have nothing in common except that they were fugitives on the run. Good guys (and girls) and evil have their stories highlighted as to how they changed history.

For reluctant readers who respond to this style, this might be the nudge into reading full biographies. For more well-read kids it’s going to seem a bit young and a little gross in some sections.

Bottom Line: Go to the Library for this one.
