Astrophysics For People in a Hurry

This feels very much like Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s spin on Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. First off, I read the entire book hearing Neil’s voice in my head which was cool. I found this to be easily understandable, and the chapters are quick so that you can quickly take in a little at a time. If I were still riding the El regularly, this would be a great commute read. Tyson says that his goal is to make readers “culturally conversant” in astrophysics and it does that. I went into it wondering if this would work as almost a text for homeschooled high schoolers. It would, but you’d have to do a lot of fleshing out of the topics and supplement with videos/experiments. Instead, I would use it as a carrot at the beginning of the course of study. Any textbook will be imminently more understandable if the basic vocabulary and concepts are already understood.

I received a DRC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
