Many homeschoolers teach history in a chronological four-year cycle. This book includes dogs of history divided into time periods. It is the perfect go along that you could stretch out and read in sections or sit down and gobble the entire history up in a few nights. We skipped right to the Middle Ages and read that chapter instead of our history spine. Ideally, I’d like books about all animals through time. (hint, hint publishers) We were thrilled to find out that in the Middle Ages there were “dog boys” who cared for and even slept with the hounds. This book will take you from ancient times up to the present and includes the many jobs that we train dogs to tackle. Overall it was a big hit here.
This is a typical nonfiction middle grade format which has many pictures divided up with sidebars of text. It took me a long time to figure out exactly how to read books formatted that way aloud. I’ll let you in on my system. I read through all the big text blocks first and then the sidebars and finally the captions on the pictures.
